Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on Shravan Poornima – the auspicious day when Yamuna – the River Goddess – tied ‘rakshaa’ on her brother’s wrist and granted him immortality. Her brother Yama – the God of Death – was so touched by her gesture that he extended the boon to all brothers whose sisters tie rakhis on their wrists and pray for their long life on this day.
Again, it was Shravan Poornima when Goddess Lakshmi tied the sacred thread to Raja Bali and prayed for his long life, good health and good fortune. Later, she revealed her identity to Raja Bali, who asked her what she wanted as a Rakhi return gift. She asked Bali to release her husband – Lord Narayana – from his commitment to be the bodyguard of Bali forever. Bali acquiesced and liberated Narayana at the cost of his own safety. Goddess Lakshmi blessed him.
Since then, sisters tie rakhi on the wrists of their brothers and pay for their long life and good fortune. And those who aren't in the country prefer Sending Online Rakhi to India for their brother.
